Community signals, not metrics

A reaction count is a signal, a leaderboard is a ranking, and neither is a popularity contest — the honest community surface labels what each number means and where it came from.

Key takeaways
  • A reaction bar is one selected state, not a scoreboard — the copy should say so.
  • A leaderboard computed from an audited ledger beats a hand-maintained one every time.
  • Share channels are the ones the product actually supports; invented channels are invented trust.

Signals have meaning

A reaction bar where one state can be selected teaches the reader what the control is for; a reaction bar that counts everything and celebrates nothing is a scoreboard with amnesia. The honest version labels its counts as local state and its selection as a choice. Signals are for the reader to express, not for the page to win.

Rankings re-derive

A leaderboard that is typed by hand is a mood; one computed from the ledger the harness audits is a fact — and the copy says which it is. The same habit covers sharing: the channels are the ones the product supports, and the copy link announces the copy.
